The rise of 'workwell' leaders: mental health and well being, the Leadership Imperative.
Timeo is a strong advocate of promoting mental health and well-being at the workplace and is an active member of "WorkWell Leaders", Singapore's first (and possibly also the world's first of this kind) non-profit that is singularly focused on building a community of CEOs and leaders to champion wellbeing as a strategic priority for their organisation.
In an era where personal and work lives blend more than ever before, leaders and managers shoulder a crucial responsibility: prioritizing mental health and well-being within their organizations. Research shows stress levels in the workplace are globally at the highest over the past two decades. Technological changes, remote or hybrid work and evolving work cultures have a strong impact on employees well-being.
‘High stress = less results’ is now well documented as well as the cost of mental health issues on Organisations (refer for example to the latest Research by Duke-NUS Medical School and the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) highlighting that the cost impact of mental health issues to employers is estimated at almost $16bn in Singapore or 2.9% of GDP).
Key players to foster “psychological safety’ within their team and organisation, leaders and managers have a critical role to play. “How people are managed” is the biggest variance in mental health and well-being within organizations show the latest studies (confirmed by Jim Harter, Ph.D., Chief Scientist of Workplace Management and Well-Being for Gallup’s workplace management practice with whom we exchanged lately). It is estimated as 4 times more important than the organisation of work (e.g the 4 day work week).
Managers create the supportive environment that caters to the holistic needs of their workforce and help people to take charge. They build trust, loyalty and foster employee engagement, reduce absenteeism, and improve retention rates. Prioritizing mental health is not just the right thing to do; it is essential for the overall success and long-term sustainability of any organization.
